The Svalbard ‘doomsday’ seed vault just added thousands of climate-hardy crops

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, known for its secure collection of over 1.3 million seed samples, received a deposit of 14,022 samples from 21 gene banks around the world. This effort aims to safeguard crop diversity in the face of climate change and other threats. Countries like Brazil, Malawi, and the Philippines contributed samples, including traditional crops and nitrogen-fixing legumes. Despite challenges posed by climate change, the importance of preserving genetic resources for future generations remains a global priority.
