South African man Angus Beukes has been acquitted of racially aggravated harassment against former England rugby player Ugo Monye. The court found that the prosecution did not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. Witnesses supported Beukes’ claim that he used a racial slur towards his partner, not towards Monye. Beukes, who is from Cape Town, argued that the word used had no significance in his country. Magistrates concluded that Beukes did not intend to be threatening, abusive, or disorderly.
