Brazil’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office is taking legal action against Vale, the Brazilian government, and the state of Para due to heavy metal contamination affecting the Xikrin Indigenous people. The lawsuit claims that Vale’s nickel mining at the Onca-Puma site has led to pollution in the Catete River, exposing the Indigenous community to dangerous levels of heavy metals. The Xikrin are using bottled water and buying fish from markets to avoid contamination. The Prosecutor’s Office is demanding a health monitoring program and support from the government and Vale to address the crisis.
