Former Milwaukee hotel bellhop Herbert Williamson pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in connection with the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell in June 2024. Prosecutors reduced the charge from felony murder in exchange for his guilty plea. Williamson faces up to nine months in prison. Three other former Hyatt employees were also charged, with one pleading guilty and two others awaiting trial or plea hearings. Surveillance video shows Mitchell being restrained for several minutes before emergency responders found him unresponsive. Mitchell’s death was ruled a homicide, with attorneys comparing it to the death of George Floyd.
