Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro is facing trial for allegedly attempting to stage a coup against current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as ruled by the Supreme Court. Bolsonaro, if found guilty, could face years in prison. He denies the charges and claims political persecution. The trial stems from events in January 2023 when Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed government buildings following Lula’s inauguration. Seven others, including former government officials, are also implicated in the trial. Bolsonaro lost the presidency in 2022 but never publicly accepted the defeat.
