Bibas Family Funeral in Israel Highlights Illegality of Hostage Taking

Three members of the Bibas family, Shiri, Kfir, and Ariel, were kidnapped by a Palestinian armed group on October 7, 2023, and later found dead in Gaza. The family’s funeral highlighted the tragedy of hostage-taking, which is a violation of international humanitarian law. Human Rights Watch determined that the group committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during the attacks. All civilians, including the Bibas family, should have been released unconditionally. Holding people hostage is illegal, and all detainees should be released immediately.
