A study has discovered 16 new species of grasshoppers in the deserts of the U.S. and Mexico, with names referencing actors from Star Trek and Frida Kahlo. These species belong to the genus Agroecotettix, commonly known as “arid scrub jumpers.” The research sheds light on the desert biodiversity in regions like the Chihuahuan Desert and South Texas Plains. Further DNA sequencing of these specimens can provide insight into their evolutionary history and the impact of past climate changes. This discovery highlights the need for more research on Agroecotettix species in Mexico.
